Gabrielle & Harry on "Staring At The Sun"

Original airdate: 11/16/06

We hope you enjoyed the episode!  We tried to blend the happy with the sad, because that’s kind of like real life, right?  Our episode’s theme was Blind Spots; how our doctors would respond when confronted with things they either couldn’t see or didn’t want to see, both in their professional and their personal lives. Starting off was easy, cause who doesn’t want to see Meredith and Derek all shiny and happy in a big bubbly bathtub?  We know we’re making them and you wait for the super great “reunion sex”, but like Meredith said, waiting is part of the fun.

We really like Meredith deciding to be more cheerful, more “bright and shiny”, but bright and shiny can be pretty hard to pull off when you’re a surgical intern, dating an Attending, working with his ex-wife and her ex-steamy (That’s Dr. McSteamy to you.) and the Chief of Surgery, (your mother’s secret lover) asks you to break up with your mother (again), who happens to be in a nursing home suffering from Alzheimer’s!  Wow.  Frankly we think Meredith does pretty well holding it all together. The scene between Ellis and Meredith at the end was so sad.  Poor Ellis feels like Richard has left her all over again.  Easy to see how Meredith ended up back in the tub not quite as shiny as before.  But as long as Derek is with her, we know she’ll get through.

It’s kind of nice that Derek and Addison are at least trying to make life in the hospital between them civil.  But as we saw in their conversation with Richard, there’s still a lot of hurt and pain between them.  It’s going to be a while before they can put that aside, but Addison took a major step in moving on by tossing her wedding rings away. Of course, moving on from Derek, doesn’t mean she’s moving toward Mark Sloan, although it seems like he’s still very interested in getting her back.  We love writing for Mark. Who else is going to ask Addison if she “wants my pickle” with such a devilish grin on his face?

Did you love Frank, our pec implant man?  He had us laughing on every take. As funny as he was, we really tried to use him to give Alex some insight on his feeling for Izzie. He opened Alex’s eyes to the fact that deep down he still has strong feelings for Izzie.  That kiss caught both Alex and Izzie off guard, but we loved how sweet they were together. Who knows what the future will bring for these two.  Perhaps Alex will be able to “feed” Izzie’s “beast” again.  Keep watchin’… you just never know.

Cristina and Burke are certainly heading for some kind of showdown.  She’s helped him get back in the game, but it’s pretty obvious that Burke’s ego has taken a bit of a beating.  That being said, he still does have the tremor and Cristina really is stepping it up in his surgeries.  Just how long can these two keep it together?  Who’s going to crack first?  Can they keep their secret a secret?  George and Burke’s friendship seems to be caught in the crossfire.  But can you blame George for worrying about who’s going to operate on his father?   That last shot of Cristina and Burke, in bed, and the simple “George knows” speaks absolute volumes.  As they say, you can run, but you can’t hide.  The truth always has a way of revealing itself.

The last thing we want to talk about is the Bailey/Mia storyline.  The great thing about working on a TV show with millions of viewers is sometimes you can impart information that can make a real difference in real people’s lives.  Did you know in the U.S., 50 children a week are accidentally backed over in driveways and on sidewalks by cars driven by family members and neighbors?  Gabrielle’s sister’s friend Arden Rosenfeld lost her two year old daughter, Veronica, to such an accident and her terrible tragedy inspired this storyline.

So long, and thanks for all the fish!

Wow! You guys are good! Thanks for putting the blog up so quickly! What an amazing episode.

You have made the MILLIONS and MILLIONS of MerDer fans so happy, loved the porny bathtub scene and how it all came full circle. I also love that they are waiting, and I cannot wait for the big scene!!! PD & EP do that so well!

I feel bad for Addy though, she needs some lovin' as long as its not Derek :)

I felt so bad for George and Ellis.. wow.. again what a great eppy.

Thank you SO MUCH!!

That was such a great episode! I hope to see Alex and Izzy together in the future. It is too soon now for sure but I'd really like to see her happy again. And he better not hurt her again! I love seeing Mer and Der back together again. They are perfect together. It's good to bring a little light into the show again. As for the poor little girl who got ran over. That was so sad and brought me to tears. I can't imagine something like that happening to my children. Thanks for a great episode!!!

Oh my. I've already e-mailed my other Grey's friends and my quote was "Grey's Back!" It was the show I've been waiting for. All of the balance that I've been missing. The patients mixed with the interns. So, so, so extremely, amazingly satisfying. Thank you. I've still got a few leftover tears in my eyes...for George's Dad, for George who has got two dilemas on his hands, for Cristina who is soon to be busted, for Addison giving up, for Izzy moving forward, for Alex trying and not succeeding to win over Izzie, for Meridith and Derek for realizing that life is real, not shiny and for Dr. Grey who is heartbroken yet again. Sigh....so very, very good.

You guys are too cute! Waiting until RIGHT WHEN THE SHOW ON THE WEST COAST ends before you post!

"But as long as Derek is with her, we know she'll get through."

Agreed! You better not take him away from her anytime soon then (or anytime at all, for that matter). It's much too nice seeing Meredith and Derek together again, even if it isn't completely bright and shiny.

Thanks for another great episode!

I haven't commented yet but I have been an avid reader. but I looooved this episode! this season has been so great. words cannot express how much I love this show! I don't think I have ever gotten this involved with a show before! Great writing! I love it, I love it, I love it!

Lisa

Amazing show with the most amazing scenes. THANK YOU for giving us a little Mer/Der to keep us wanting more.

Peta

Great episode. I agree, Burke and Cristina are heading for a showdown. How will they come out on the other side? Please don't make the damage irreparable...pretty please with cherry on top.
Loved Bailey singing.

Rachel

I cannot stop watching the Meredith/Derek bath tub scene...can we have more of that please!! Those 2 together is the best thing that's happened this season. More Mer/Der I say ;)

I loved this episode. You made me a little nervous when Derek and Addison together went to see the Chief about his depression. But you said that was just an act of collegiality, right?

My fave moment in the show was the end bathtub scene. Of course, I can't figure out where the bathtub is in a one bathroom house where I know they have some sort of a walk-in shower.

I didn't like the shiny penny MerDer. I like the real MerDer of the old bathtub, in the old house bathroom. That is the MerDer I remember from Season One. I had a vision of old comfy bathrobes made sexy by the sould of the people who wear them.

TR Knight was just amazing in this episode. The acting is getting so so so good I just can't imagine who would win an award.

Bailey singing was priceless. It was the perfect song. Addison and the bad juju wedding rings.... oh my.

This was a great episode.

Susan

Great episode. So nice to see Mer and Der happy, and more importantly, together. A couple of questions: Why does the chief have Merideth be the one to tell her mom he is gone again?? Couldn't he do it himself?? I think that apeaks to his character.
George's backing off from Callie was surprising, since he seemed to eager to win her back. He can't imagine that she is really interested in Sloan, can he??He knows her well, and she is not, in any way, McSteamy material. I mean that in a good way. She has insight into him quickly, and Geo should understand the idea of rebound sex. He lives with Mer, for heaven's sake.
The scene with Addison and Derek in the Chief's office was priceless. Many good funny lines from many characters tonite. I love the mix of humore with the serious stuff. Thanks!!

This episode was awesome! I was happy, sad, smiling, worried, teary eyed...all of it. Every storyline is so interesting and keeps me glued to the TV. And thanks for the heads up that next weeks episode will be long. I'll be sure to set my DVR better this time - no superbowl cut off repeat like last year. I can't miss a single minute of this show.

Kayla

Thank you so much for making an episode about cars backing out of driveways and hitting children. It does happen and a few people I know have been affected by it. It was a strong storyline and it hit alot of our emotional nerves...We did cry but at least maybe tomorrow a-lot of Grey's Viewers will watch behind then when they back out!

Also...Maybe for a little while Alex can feed Addison's beast while Izzie heals. I would definetly be ALL in for that to happen! ;-)

My favorite part of the episode, hands down (and this is strange because I am all for the Mer/Der sex...ore Mer/Der sex I say) was Bailey singing to WILLIAM (I assume Tuck is her nickname for him, but it drives me crazy no less when she refers to her son as Tuck) at the end. Chandra Wilson has such a beautiful voice...it tied all the storylines together beautifully. She was so cute when she was trying to get someone to wake up the baby, and she was trying to sneak through the hospital at the same time...;)

I personally love the Richard/Ellis storyline...I hope it will be explored so much more and that it just doesn't end like that. Kate Burton is doing an amazing job with it. And he admits, that as much as he loves Ellis...he is lonely and misses his wife: and I think watching Ellis go through what she is going through...it is probably a little to much for him.

And, is it just me or where Addi's wedding bands different than they were last season? Last season they were white gold and all diamond-y...hmmmm...

Good show!

wheezy

Wheezy enjoyed this ep from beginning to end. Wheezy loved Alex and Izzie and their renewed friendship. I also buy Derek and Addison as friends and it makes me happy. Looking forward to MerDer- they seem more like real life now than like romantic fantasy. It's about time Ellis showed up, sad that Richard had to choose his wife over her but it was the right choice. Callie/George- worrying over their rough road ahead. And Yang/Burke- can they survive? Their story makes me cringe and wince and cover my eyes waiting for the ball to drop. Lastly, Dr Bailey. I love her. Seriously love her. Singing "God Bless the Child" on the phone to her baby I had tears running down my face, she is so warm and emotive and even though she's younger than I am, can she be my mom too? Give that woman an Emmy already.

Thanks Grey's Writers!!

Theresa

Wow what an amazing bubble bath...oppps, I mean episode. Everything was right on tonight, and I loved every second of it. You have no idea how happy I am the Mer and Der are together. Finally I can sleep peacefully! Please let them be happy for a while? I know something will happen Shonda Style to ruin the happiness, but please let them be for now. Thanks for feeding my addiction. Can't wait for next week! It looks like another Super Bowl type episode. Come on next Thursday!

Wow,
Thanks for a great episode! I LOVED it! It's actually my favorite of the season. I loved the depth of the characters and their relationships. That is what has made Grey's so amazing since episode one. You portray true human emotion, drama and awareness and I LOVE to watch. I can't wait until Thanksgiving!

Wow this episode was nothing short of amazing. It was as if I was watching season one all over again. The sad mixed in with the happy moments. And who knew our happy and shiny moments would come from none other than our Izzie and Alex? I sure didn't and let me just say that I love their dynamic and can't wait to see what's in store for them. I'm glad you guys didn't get them together right away. To me that would have been unrealistic since she's obviously grieving for Denny. However, I am happy that you guys made Frank give Alex that extra push. I hope to see more of these two in the future, they could be great for each other and for Grey's Anatomy!

Cindy

What a fantastic episode!

I loved that the focus was once again on the type of medical stories that touch our hearts. There were so many great moments tonight, but without a doubt having Chandra Wilson sing "God Bless the Child" was by far the highlight of the season! It was beautiful and it moved me to tears. Well done!!!

Mimi

Thank you thank you thank you for one of the BEST episodes of the season. Thank you for making Karev more and more loveable...and thank you for making Callie so damn strong...and THANK YOU for putting our McDreamy in a bathtub. You guys are BACK and I can't wait until next week...Thanksgiving!

Natalie
