The last thing I’m gonna say for now…

A lot of you wrote to protest that I didn’t talk about McVet’s statement to Mer or about McDreamy’s “I love you.”  So, here goes…

Oooh, wait!!  Can I just tell you that, last night, McDreamy told me he loved ME?  Okay, not so much McDreamy as Patrick Dempsey and not so much “me” as “working on the show” but still…my heart skipped a little beat just the same to have him utter the words in that voice of his.  That man says “I love you” better than anyone on the planet.  But he’s married.  In real life.  And on the show.  As much as we like to fantasize, we all have to remember that…

Anyway, I was proud of Finn.  I was proud of the fact that he comes over to say that he and Meredith aren’t exclusive.  He’s pissed but they’re not exclusive.  Because, honestly, he doesn’t know what happened in that exam room.  He doesn’t even know there WAS an exam room.   And he really is a good guy, a strong guy, a guy who feels something for a woman for the first time since his wife’s death.  I like that he’s not petty or easily made jealous.  I like that he’s confident enough to stick.  And I LOVE that he says that Derek is bad for her and he (Finn) is a good thing.  There is some truth to it.  Given the history of Mer/Der.  And Finn is a rescuer-guy.  You know, rescuer-guys, right?  They’re the ones who are determined to break through the scary/damaged barrier we dark and twisty girls put up.  They’re the real thing, rescuer-guys are the guys you marry.

The guys you should marry.   But then there are the Dereks of the world…

Let me say a little something about McDreamy men.  They are scary and damaged themselves.  They carry a little bit of tortured soul in them.  But they mean well.  And they’re honest.  And they’re so, so, so darn tempting.  Especially when they stand in your kitchen say “I just…I love you.  I have loved you…forever.”  How in the world are we supposed to say no to that?  We should.  We should send them packing.  But…SERIOUSLY?

And so Meredith is left with this choice.  Between what her brain knows she should do and what her heart wants her to do.  And while it seems obvious and easy, it’s absolutely not.  Finn has plans.  And Derek’s got a wife.  And there’s the choice to be healthy and mature and whole and the choice to jump off the cliff.  And no one jumps off a cliff without a parachute if they know what is good for them.   Plus, it’s not like she doesn’t have feelings for Finn.  She definitely has feelings for Finn.  And I know Derek says that he loves her but he says it about twenty episodes too late.

She stood there and said “pick me, choose me, love me.”  She begged him.  BEGGED him in the most humble, humiliating, soul-baring way possible.  And he chose Addison.  He walked away and chose Addison.

That would give any girl pause.  Major, major pause.

Meredith’s pausing.

She’s hit the pause button.

But, don’t worry, I’m not dragging this out all season.  I’m not gonna drag it out very long at all.  I like to move things forward.

I like to take my finger off the pause button and see what happens next.

Okay, that’s all for now.  Because I have get back to writing episodes…

Thank you for taking the time to add this!

Thank you so much for putting this up! I completely agree that she should be a little hesitant, but still, he's McDreamy. And he loves her. And he is sooo charming. Because Meredith is so flawed (in the greatest way possible) Finn needs to move on and find someone that can and will appreciate him. Also a note about Addison. I have had so much respect for her character, and at the end of the premiere I must say I was a little shocked how she put the panties on the board, I thought she would take the higher road. Although if I were put in her situation, I can't say that I wouldn't have done the same thing.
Thanks so much again Shonda for giving us all this amazing addiction!

Wow, basically that was a pretty good episode.

However, I did have to convince my mom (and dad) to watch it. My mom gets really mad at characters on TV shows when they do wrong, and her anger was directed at Derek. But low and behold at 8 o'clock, guess who pulled into the garage? And as for my dad, he is on COMPLETE denial about his liking of the show, eventhough he watched the first and second season in two days and claimed 'TV crack.' Denial. But I did like the episode, oh-so very much.

And against my mom's better judgement, I'm going for McDreamy. Fo' sho.

Keep 'em coming!

Jean

Shonda,

Do you really think that Derek is bad for Meredith? I know he is late in telling her he loves her, but he did love her the whole time, she just didn't know it. I'm concerned with your description of Finn as the kind of guy you marry and Derek as something else. Derek is a good guy that was thrown for a major loop and took awhile to regain his footing and direction. He was shattered. Meredith doesn't need a guy to rescue her, she needs to rescue herself. I want Meredith and Derek to have a conversation where everything that has gone unsaid finally gets said. His crying in the elevator with Bailey, which was obviously about his decision to let go of Meredith and not because of losing the young patient with the fiance, when he told Addison that Meredith was more than a fling, etc. She needs to know just how deep he cares/cared and he needs to know just how hard it is for her to trust and believe. Circumstance and miscommunication get in the way too much in real life, but especially in TV. I don't mind if it takes awhile for them to get together, but you have written two characters that truly love each other and in the end they should be together. By the way, I have no sympathy for Addison and don't think she has any right to call Meredith a slut. When her marriage was in trouble and she wasn't getting what she wanted from her husband, she slept with his best friend to get his attention only she didn't bargain for how much it would truly hurt him or the fact he would walk away. Besides, let's not forget how when Mark visited last season he asked Addison if she told Derek that she continued the affair even after he left New York. You don't continue an affair if you really want to save your marriage.

this show is AMAZING! wherever you go with it will be amazing! but i just have to say...i love callie and george, they each deserve to be happy, and it looks like together they just might get what they deserve.

Michelle

AHHHH Shonda you're killing me!!!

After the premiere I was feeling pretty good about Meredith picking Derek...now I'm not so sure...

*is it Thursday yet?*

Jenn

Izzie...laying on the bathroom floor...It was gut wrenching. I loved Christina and Burke's scene. She has changed so much and has become a real person becuase of him. And thank you for not having George say he loves Callie yet. He wouldn't be George if he lied to her. AND...Thank God, McDreamy finally told Meredith he loves her. Shonda, you did such an amazing job with this episode. I loved every second of it.

Jennifer

Thank you for the insight on Finn and McDreamy. I love this storyline and this conflict, because I think that most everyone has a McDreamy and a Finn in there life (although I doubt most of our McDreamy's look like PD, but they are our McDreamy's). And you are right most of us would pause if it were us in real life. But looking on the outside it's so easy to tell someone to jump off the cliff, but are right when it's you it's alot harder choice to make. I'm glad you reminded us about the Pick Me speech. I married my Finn and although I haven't seem my McDreamy in 14 years, I still wonder if that would have been the right choice. My life is good and happy and all that, but I wish I had taken the chance to see if the parachute would open. I hope that Meredith takes the risk cuz I think she will always wonder if she doesn't. Maybe she could just walk down the cliff on a side trail instead of parachuting off it....

Kristin

Thanks for the additional comments! I always love reading your posts and can't wait what you have in store for us this season! Already counting the days until next Thursday. . .

Crazed Fan

you amaze me Shonda, that you still take the time to blog to your dedicated fans. TWICE! Thank you.

ITA with every point you made on this blog.
I Love DEREK. LOVE HIM. His boyish, giddyish, nervous grin after he told her he loved her. How can you not LOVE HIM.

But, at the same time, I AM glad that Mer is taking pause. She should. Him telling her he loves her is just the beginning. He still has a lot of time to make up for and much trust to regain. He should have to work for it a bit. BC, really, if Mer fell into his arms right then and there, it would not a been beleivable to me. It would have been way to soapy and I know you don't write like that.

I'm glad to hear that you are not going to drag it out. I LOVE Mer/Der. Let him earn back her trust, REALLY earn it back. And let Mer PAUSE. She deserves that time to decide if she can trust Der again.

Cant' wait for next week!!!

I once was in love with a mcdreamy---and he pushed me away because he was dark and tortured...and then I met a rescuer guy who was amazing and kind and sensitive---and then my mcdreamy who had pushed me away showed up and told me he loved me...I chose my heart shonda---and me and my Mcdreamy are here today loving each other with our flaws and our passion---
I'm sorry---Meredith likes Finn---that's all you've ever given us---but she loves Derek. Please don't change course again---- Mereidth and Mcdreamy should follow their heart for once. I love the decisive Derek and I love Callie and Meredith and what's happening there.---There are men out here with tortured souls that do in fact finally get it right---and Derek got it right in Meredith's kitchen--- and the looks between them said it all. I don't want McDreamy with anyone else---and quite frankly we suffered too long watching him going through the motions with Addison---do we really have to wait longer for this relationship to finally find its feet? Good grief--- Derek isn't evil and we know very little about Finn but quite frankly---he's too nice and too perfect and for someone like Meredith would not in a million years hold her attention for very long. I want Derek and Meredith. This is season 3...its time for them to finally have their moment and their bliss----

Jenny

AAAAAAHHHH I can't wait until Thursday! And I can't wait to see the reaction to the panties on the bulletin board...

:o)

You guys are keeping this show real!! I am in my fourties now and life is not as neat as I thought in my twenties. A great life has passion and twists and turns and decisions to mull over later. Keep it up. The cast additions of Addison and Callie as regulars are great. The fill ins of the Dennys, Finns, and Bomb Guy are real for anyone who has dated and then met "the one they are to be with". We love the filler men also!! They add to the spice of the path of life. Thank you for this show!!

Julie

Shonda,

I LOVE you!!! I Love you for giving us Derek & Meredith. And I LOVE you for saying this will not drag out. Thank you for all you do for us. We LOVE you & your amazing characters.

Yah, Derek said he loves Meredith 20 episodes too late and yah she begged him (i still cant watch that episode by the way it hurts way too much) but truthfully he is human, he can make mistakes! so he gave the women who betrayed and hurt him so badly a chance, how may men do you who would do that? but when he did that he betrayed and hurt Meredith so maybe he doesnt deserve second chance. But she should give it to him anyway, b-coz she herself said he wouldnt be Derek if didnt try to work things out with Addison thats jus who he is. So in conclusion she should pick him, choose him,luv him, b-coz she loves hims and if u luv people you must except the fact that they make bad chose's, dang, she should know she makes bad chose's all the time and he really does love her

Shonda...you rock! This was my favorite episode since the very first because...Derek is BACK! He smiles! He didn't smile all last season. No, he didn't! But there he is, smiling! I love it! I love you! I love that Patrick has a great gig, and twins coming, and I love that he's happy on the show!

Rock on, Shonda-licious!

Kelly

Of course, speaking from experience, when you're a dark and twisty girl and you marry a rescuer-guy... well, when you don't need rescuing anymore, when you might be dark and twisty but manage it in a healthy way? He goes off to find another girl to rescue.

They're not always the best guys to marry.

Shonda-
I applaud you and the other writers for this excellent episode. I watched it for the second time today (courtesy of Tivo)and I caught so many more things than I did watching it on Thursday night. I could go on at length about all the wonderful things about this episode, but I think other posters covered that with your last blog. WE LOVED IT!! Seriously.
I just want to touch on a couple of things (I can't help myself). Miranda Bailey. God how I love this woman. She was really letting her feelings show. And I could be mistaken, but I think a lot of her grief over Omar was really for Izzy. She was really talking to Izzy. Telling her that she mishandled the whole Denny thing (which I hope we'll hear more about next episode), that she was so very sorry and that she really was feeling bad for her. But Izzy wasn't there to tell, so she told Omar.
George calling McDreamy an ass. Thank you. Thank you for giving George some balls. He really needed them.
And this is wishful thinking, but I would love for Mer to pick Finn, Addison to hook up with someone, and for McDreamy to be left twisting in misery for awhile. That would be good.
PLEASE KEEP FINN AROUND FOR A GOOD LONG WHILE. You killed off my wonderful Denny, please don't run off my McVet. PLEASE.
Thank you for a great show. I'm officially addicted. Could I get a doctor? Preferably, McDreamy?

nikki

the show is brilliant and i am beyond excited for this season. keep up the great work!

Dearest Shonda...

First of all I want to thank you...The show is amazing!

Second of all, you`re scaring me with the pause button...Meredith deserves a break I agree. She has been through hell and back with Derek but tell me he makes it up to her! I mean they do belong together...

Third, I do feel kind of sorry for Finn...he doesn`t know what happened in the exam room but will he find out? And how will he react? I kind of feel that the quiet ones are the ones who react the most...

Fourth, thank you for saying you won`t drag Mer/Der reunion (God I hope!) for all the season...it would be murder...hahaha!

And last, you are the best!!! You and the other writers rock! I`m giving you my hand...take me for a roller coaster ride, Shonda...
