From Shonda: THE HARD TRUTH

Okay, this is the last time I’m going to post on a non-episode night.  I hate not posting because it is kind of addictive for me to write to you guys – I so love hearing what you say back.  But I like to step back and hand over the blog to the next episode’s writer and this Sunday’s episode was written by the very talented, very funny Krista Vernoff with story by Mimi Schmir (also funny and talented) and…oh, you are NOT GOING TO BELIEVE HOW GOOD THE EPISODE IS, let me tell you what happens.  It starts with…oh, yeah, the secrecy thing.

The point is, I shouldn’t be posting right now.  I have no right to be posting.

But I had to.

Because I’ve been reading your comments.

And reading.

And reading (you guys wrote a lot of comments).

And I’m getting kind of worried about some of you.  Not all of you.  Just the really nice some of you who have sweet, kind, idealistic, optimistic, hopeful thoughts about Dylan.

Brace yourselves.  Ready?

Dylan is dead, y’all.

He’s really dead.

He exploded.

Into a LOT of tiny pieces.

That stuff being washed off Meredith by Cristina and Izzie in the shower scene at the end?

That was chunks of Dylan.

In the lexicon of dead, that makes him super-dead.

DEAD.

May he rest in peace.

I’m really sorry.  I really am.

Thank you for setting the record straight for all the obsessed fans. That was all some talked about on the boards till I was sick of hearing about it.

Maggie

Jennifer

Hey Shonda,
Well yeah this is the first time I've commented on a writers blog, but I am a die hard GA fan. First let me tell you that last weeks eppi was... well words cant describe the feelings that I was expressing. LOL. But yea, I've been reading the boards(as usual) and even after your post people were like "Yeah, Dylan's still alive!", blah, blah, blah! It became annoying at points but whatever. Well, I really CANNOT wait until tomorrows episode... the suspense is just about to kill me. You are a fantastic writer and kepp up the GREAT work!
~Jenn

P.S.: PLEASE do what you can to get Meredith and Derek back together ASAP.

P.S.S.: Please let George find a good girl, he really deserves one!

Em

Thank you. It was kind of annoying to see all the "maybe he's not dead" and "him and Mer would be so cute together" stuff. It's like: "Dude, he was holding the freaking bomb. When it exploded. He's dead." You pretty much rock. Oh, and keep the MD love coming. ;) Just had to throw that in there.

Priscila, BRAZIL

haha. I think we get it. And thanks for clearing that up. Not that I had doubts, it´s just that people were getting TOO hopeful!
You rock, thanks for posting!

Amanda

awee..thats sad but im glad everyone else is okayy..i love your show!!!

michelle

Back to lovin McDreamy :)

Vanessa

Thank you Shonda! I seriously think some people needed to hear that. Ha totally just made me think of "Rosencranzt and Guildenstern are Dead." Blah. I love your blogs though!

Samantha Faulkner , NB

Thank you so much for the clarification! i love your show so much, you and all of your crew and actors are so talented, thanks so much for devoting your time to this.

sophie

chunks of dylan...ouch.
a little harsh to the naive people.
lucky i'm not one of them.
no really, as much as it pains me to see dear dylan dead, which is ALOT, the thought of him stealing meredith from her mcdreamy makes me sick. not that mcdreamy is still her's...heh...maybe i am one of those naive people...
oh and by the way, shonda,
you are amazing.
sophie
P.S. oh and the whole almost telling us what happens thing... that's just plain mean!

ariella

I'll miss the non-episode night posts!

First, I absolutely love this blog. Love hearing the thoughts that went into the episode as a whole or a given concept... or the latest meanderings of my favorite Grey's couple. (You have to ask? Meredith and Derek, of course!)

All of that to the side - this posting made me laugh. I've heard hopes from several people that perhaps Dylan was still somehow alive. Thanks for visiting us to inject a solid dose of common sense. :)

Tomorrow night... time to learn the lessons of Yesterday... can't wait!

Cat

The fact that the GA writers post on this blog just solidifies how absolutely incredible this show really is. I'm so happy that many others have recently realized the quality of the series, and finally know what I've been talking about since last year.

Dear Shonda,

Bummer about the whole dead thing. I liked Dylan. He had potential in an eye-candy, love-triangle, soap-opera kind of way.

But I'm getting over it.

Without Dylan, maybe, (maybe?!) "MerDer" has a chance. Seriously! Please? Seriously...

In either case, (and regardless of how long it takes for Meredith and McDreamy to get it together), I want to thank you for your part in creating this amazing show. It is the highlight of my week!

Best wishes (and fingers crossed for MerDer) in the rest of the season.

Sincerely,
Sarah

Hun, you just let your addiction take over and keep on writing on non episode nights.

I have to say that I am a huge fan of the show and was guided to your blog only a few short days ago. I keep coming back in hopes that you have written something more.

You just make me laugh! (and that's a good thing)

Now I know you can't tell us your secrets and that's ok. It would kind of ruin it for me come Sunday night any way. So you just keep your secrets and support your addiction by writing what ever comes into your head. Life is just to serious sometimes and we have to have the humor.

Thanks to you and everyone that is affiliated with the show for making this such a wonderful adventure.

With two very young children, you have given me my "me time" every Sunday night. Now that is a huge accomplishment in my book.

Hugs,

Stacey M.

Just wanted to say, it's getting INSANE how popular this show is. I went to two different stores to buy the first season DVD today - sold out at BOTH!

Lin

So it looks like she did actually get a little bit of him before he left...and in a totally different sense than most people think.
It was great Shonda, I loved it :)

Fay

You are so talented. Why don't you develop another show about relationships on a police force or fire station crew and have Kyle Chandler be the main male character? We would all love another one of your shows on another day of the week. It's hard to wait 7 days for another one. Thanks for developing Grey's Anatomy. It has made TV worth watching again :-)

Khan

Shonda,

Your "Dylan is dead, yall!" line cracked me up. I like how you just shoot straight from the hip without any regrets.

Many of my friends were kind up upset that Dylan died in that manner, but I told them it had to happen.

Shonda please hook Meredith up with someone other than McDreamy. She sometimes makes herself look desperate. I know everyone want's them to get back together but I think it will be a recipe for disaster.

I will be fine if it doesn't happen because I know the characters speak to you.

Kristina Miller

My mom had a thing for Dylan, so she was way upset when he blew up, which neither of us expected would happen. I love intense, and that was waaay past intense.

Also...I wonder if Patrick Dempsey realizes how many people adore him. But then again all the cast is loved...'we love you!' :D

I have to say that the writers having a blog is an awesome idea. Thank you for taking time out of your busy schedules to do something like this. You guys truly have millions of people hanging on every word you say. XD That's awesome.

:D Don't forget to tell each other how much everyone rocks!

Baylink

Oh sure... make us wait until *Saturday*.

:-)

Ok, I'm just going to treat this as the "we just got the DVD's" thread I asked for, whether that was your intention or not.

So, first, in describing Krista, you forgot "very pretty". But you're female, and presumably straight, so I guess we'll let you get away with it this once.

So, second: nice work on the DVD set. I'm a pretty hard judge, and I was pretty happy with them. Dual commentaries was nice (but of course I would say that, since, y'know, Katie. :-)

The lost pilot footage was cool, too, though, if there's a Mysterious Unaired Pilot, you know we wanna see it. (Rule of thumb: get the rights for *everything*. :-)

The deleted scenes were pretty decent, too.

So, all in all, not a bad set at all, particularly for the price.

But, and now, I'm sure I speak for everyone when I say: please get a good Behind The Scenes shooter for this season for the season 2 set, if you haven't already.

You *know* you'll make the money back. ;-) 3 guys with PD-170s? How much can that cost?

Baylink

Oh, and a quick followup: sure, you have the right to post. Cause, y'know: your show. :-)

Brittney

First, I'll admit... I also have checked almost daily this week to see if you have updated, Shonda. I understand that the other writer(s) have episodes going on, too, but I bet you'd be hard-pressed to find someone that would object to having you and that person post also - and as many times as each of you feel like it. It just feels good to know that for once we are being heard and spoken to by a writer of a show that we devote our time and our hearts to. So you just keep getting you write-on =)

Now... I see that you are worried about some of us because we couldn't seem to quite wrap our heads around the fact that Dylan was/is dead. But you shouldn't be worried. You should be happy, because that just shows you how influential your writing can be. We fell in love with one of your characters that wasn't even on the show that long at all, and we became attached to the story itself.

That, and the fact that so many have mentioned... You didn't really give closure on the event. We never heard about Dylan or the explosion again after it happened. Yes, we saw the shower scene, but it was hard to believe that the explosion actually happened and actually killed someone (or two, if the partner died also), and no one mention it or seem too upset.

I personally thought you might touch on the reason for that so that we could all sleep better tonight as we rest up for tomorrow's episode, but I guess you have your reasons... And I'm gonna try to trust you on that. You have gotten me this far.

How far have you gotten me? Well up until a couple of weeks ago I never really made time to see the show since I have two toddlers at home, but I became interested after one episode, then after the Superbowl episode, I became hooked...No, I became addicted. I ordered the 1st season as soon as I could find somewhere that had it in stock, and as soon as it arrived, I sat and watched it almost continuously until I was done. It kind of scares me, because I've never been that into a show before.

You guys are doing a phenomenal job. Knowing that, I hope you sleep better than I do as I wait to see the next episode!

Thanks so much for all the work and thought you put into the show, and also for taking the *extra* time to communicate with us!

Tammy

I am SO addicted to this show...I do not know how I am going to make it through the season break without it!! The cast is SO amazing-I don't think you could have gotten a better group of people- I hope they stick around forever. I fell in love with Patrick Dempsey in the movie With Honors which happens to be my all time favorite movie- and now here he is in this amazing character..and I just LOVE HIM-LOVE HIM- LOVE HIM. Even though is he is just acting a part with Meredith, the chemisty is so amazing, and he is so "McDreamy", you just can't help but believe that kind of love is really out there. Thanks for this fantastic amazing show!

Kris

Hi Shonda,

I know you know how fabulous your show is, but I still feel the need to tell you. I have never been so invested in a TV show and its characters, before, ever, SERIOUSLY! I love everything about this show. Grey's has just the right balance of humor, emotion, and intellect, it's incredible and like nothing I've ever seen before. My friends and I get together every Sunday night for a Grey's viewing party. We laugh and then we cry and then we yell at the TV when things don't go the way we want. So thanks, Shonda, and everyone else for giving all of us something to relate to, look forward to, and, in my case, something to daydream about when I should be working. And while I'm at it, can you tell Patrick Dempsey I said thanks for making me feel all giddy? Or maybe you could give me his phone number and I could tell him myself. Or maybe I'll just keep dreaming. Anyway, we can't thank you guys enough for the amazing work you do. You all are awesome!
-Kris
